Tooth Whitening is a method of bleaching out blemishes, stains or marks from the teeth. It is available in a number of forms. All work on the principle of bleaching the teeth using a form of specially formulated peroxide (hair preparations and other peroxide chemicals are dangerous and do not work).
At home tray tooth whitening: Special whitening trays are made to fit your mouth. A low concentration-whitening agent is placed in the trays, which are normally worn for a set period. This method is also used as a maintenance procedure after a power whitening has been completed.
Over-the-counter teeth whitening systems: These can be purchased from pharmacies, supermarkets or over the internet in the form of gels, toothpastes, or strips containing very low dose peroxides. They may lighten the teeth slightly, but are not recommended, as they are not monitored in use.
Power tooth whitening: This is done in a dental surgery using a higher concentration whitening gel with an activating light that releases the peroxide from the gel faster, resulting in a rapid whitening of the teeth. We use the ZOOM! Advanced Power system, as we know that we get good results with every application. The teeth lighten to between 5 and 8 shades in 60 minutes. The ZOOM! Advanced Power light source is infra-red ultra-violet filtered which stops the teeth from becoming hot under the light or the soft tissues from being damaged.
Disadvantages: There is always a small amount of “bounce-back” which means that the colour will not remain totally white, but will darken slightly over a very short time. All systems and all methods have this problem. But by regular home application maintenance, this can be controlled. Tooth sensitivity may also occur after treatment with all whitening systems. This can be relieved using certain gels, mouthwashes or toothpastes. ZOOM! Advanced Power does not have this problem as much as many other systems
