Veneers & Crowns
Veneers are known as porcelain or dental veneers or dental laminates. These are thin porcelain covers that are bonded onto the front of the teeth. Well-made veneers look entirely natural. They are used to change the shape, or the appearance of discoloured, chipped, or malaligned teeth, or to close small gaps between the teeth. A small amount of enamel tooth material is drilled away from the front and sides of the teeth. A mould of the teeth is sent to the dental technician who makes the veneers in porcelain. The dentist then bonds the veneer onto the front of the prepared teeth.
Disadvantages: Once the teeth are prepared the process is not reversible. The veneer may come off, which means it can be refitted, or it may break which means that a new one will have to be made and fitted, as veneers are not repairable.
- Our crowns look natural and beautiful to enhance your smile
- Crowns are used to change the shape, colour and appearance of the teeth, especially of badly broken down or worn teeth
- Crowns are great looking and very strong
Crowns are usually placed as a last resort over heavily filled, root-treated, or badly broken down teeth. Crowns or caps are tooth-shaped, thimble-like covers made to fit over prepared teeth or implants to restore natural function and aesthetics. Crowns are made in a variety of materials such as plastic, stainless steel, brass, gold, porcelain, and bonded porcelain to metal.
We like to make our crowns out of e porcelain, which is one of the new generation ultra-strong porcelains that give great strength and wonderful natural appearance to restored teeth. We do use other materials as well. Porcelain crowns can be cemented onto the prepared tooth or bonded to the tooth.
Crowns are made by the removal of all old filling material, decay and weakened tooth. A core may then be built to replace the missing tooth material and then moulds are taken for the technician to make the crown that is fitted by the dentist. Crowns have been placed on teeth throughout history. Modern crowns are almost entirely successful.
Advantages: Weak, heavily filled or badly broken down teeth are covered and protected by the crown. The bite can be adjusted using crowns, and the appearance of the mouth and teeth can be enhanced and changed.
Disadvantages: Crowns are a last resort treatment and can only be replaced with new crowns or the loss of the tooth. Crowns may dislodge, but they can be recemented. Crowns may break and are not repairable, so need to be remade. The process of having a crown made is irreversible.
